Buspirone

Buspirone is a medication primarily used to treat anxiety disorders, particularly generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). It is classified as an anxiolytic and works differently from typical sedatives like benzodiazepines. Buspirone functions by acting on serotonin receptors, especially the 5-HT1A receptor, and to a lesser extent on dopamine receptors. Unlike many other anxiety medications, buspirone does not cause sedation or significant addiction risks, making it a safer choice for long-term treatment. It may take several weeks to show its full effect. Side effects can include dizziness, headache, and nausea. Buspirone is often prescribed when a non-sedating and non-habit-forming medication is preferred.
